How old is Colt? It is very normal for young dogs (around a year of age) to do this... I used to like it for security dogs, as it does seem that the dogs are alerting all who are near that they are on duty. Many dogs, especially GSD's do this. It may be due to the excitement of going outdoors, or they may have startled an animal by barking, thus creating a great chase. If he is young, it should pass, but if it bothers you, Try not letting him out "in excitement". Slow him down, use obedience commands that he knows. If he doesn't know any, now is the time to start. Another way is to creat a new job for him, so you could throw a treat out in the yard that he goes and looks for, short circuting the behavior.
