Most of us take our dogs with us when we go out around our grounds/house/barn at night. The dogs see this as a fun excuse to go running about. Make sure that your dog knows it's his job to focus on you. When your dog anticipates your next move and runs ahead (in my case, my dog ran back into the garage, thinking that I was all done in the office). Quietly, move to a hiding place, and don't call your dog. Wait to see how long it takes him/her to 1) notice you didn't show up and 2) come to look for you. don't make any noise or help him find you. However, if you have a worried or panicky dog, don't let him look too long, otherwise he will remember the stress of you not being there, but not what he did to get rid of that stress. When he locates you, praise and praise! You may need him to find you at any time, so now you are training him to stay focused, and re trace his steps back to you if necessary.
