This is the secret below (Google "DMX shield Tinker it" if the likn doesn't work). This shield will plug snugly into an arduino micro controller which you can use to control your leds. I believe the shield can handle decoding a ton of DMX channels, but you could either control RGB directly from a fader, or you could pre-program effects into the arduino and use DMX parameters to trigger them. A really neat strip that I've been playing with is the LPD8806 strip available off Adafruit. Each LED is individually addressable (separate from DMX), so you could get some really neat effects.
