there are two ways the scanner itself can be the problem:
1. If the wheel in question is gear driven, it could be missing a tooth on the gear.
2. If the wheel is directly mounted on the stepper motor shaft, the cause could be the driver IC/transistor stage of the associated stepper motor.
If it is still feasible for warranty repair, I would go that route first.
