I'd say that the "island" was probably more like a large sandspit. I can't tell exactly where they were but there are land masses between the bay and Ocean Parkway, the bay on one side, the ocean on the other. They did find bullet casings and what appeared to be shotgun shell casings on the island. At one point, a half sunken small fishing boat and other derelict things from one storm or another.
