Re: Defunding SS..WTF?-
Not true Nancy. No one wants to get rid of SS..The fact is it cannot be sustained over the long haul with less workers contributing and more recipients depending on it, without substantial changes. It was never intended to be an individual's sole means of support as it turned out to be for our parents and many of us. I recognized the handwriting on the wall back in the late 70's when rents were already exceeding expectations of what anticipated SS income and the small union pension would cover in the years to come and went into a period of depression. It's turned even worse than I imagined. Luckily, I had my health, jobs that paid enough to put a little away and worked until 69, SS COL increases were better than anticipated. Not everyone is as fortunate. I have friends that had to go to SS disability early and if they didn't have family or a partner, I don't know how they'd survive or keep a roof over their head, on their own. Reps want to encourage those who can, to provide their own nest egg supplement and not depend solely on a government handout unless there is no other choice.
