I often think that had she had such love before, she would have been an entirely different person. He made himself a part of our family, and gave of himself in every way to her, her children, and grandchildren. They lived in two homes on the same property, he would take the granddaughter to school, and pick her up later. He took the grandson into his business, teaching, training, and mentoring. My niece said last night he taught her teen-age son to be a man. He visited me several times when I was in the hospital, thinking nothing of driving over 100 miles each way. He offered to drive from Arizona to pick me up if I wanted to visit when they moved there.
Yes, they'd had a good time yesterday. She had a business errand to run in Las Vegas, he insisted on accompanying her, he didn't want her driving alone. Afterward, they had lunch out and played a little in the casino. But he was tired when they got home, and retired early.
I wish he had more years, but going to sleep and just not waking up is the end I think everyone wishes for.
