My Father's people lived in the small city of Slonim in Belarus. They landed in Ellis Island around 1905. Slonim is still there. In the early 20th Century, Slonim had a large and vibrant Jewish community but my Grandfather, along with many thousands of other Eastern European Jews decided to try his luck in a country where "the streets were paved with gold." He never got rich but his decision to move here was fortunate because the Holocaust claimed virtually every Jew in Belarus.
