QUOTE: "Earlier this month, a consultant known for urging cities to stop "enabling" homeless people was tapped to lead the U.S. Interagency Council on
Homelessness. The Trump administration replaced the Obama-era executive director with Robert Marbut, who has blocked charities from handing out food to homeless people.
"You can't be feeding on the street. But likewise, you have to provide and enhance and sometimes create programs that address the root causes, because hunger is not the root cause of homelessness," he told NPR in 2014."
So instead of allowing charities to feed the homeless, the homeless now go hungry or are forced to look for food in trashcans and dumpsters. Something feeding them tries to avoid. I don't see how feeding them is enabling them when they have nowhere to live with a kitchen. They can't feed themselves. They can't afford even small efficiency apts with a hot plate and student mini-fridge.
Everyone knows the root causes of being homeless. Addictions, mental illness and the low wages paid the uneducated/unskilled. The outrageous cost of rent and ever rising cost of food. No one seems to be addressing those issues. The numbers are increasing every year. It appears that both parties would rather sweep these people under the rug and do little or nothing to change things.
