The bills had been going up for years, but reasonably so until about 5 years ago, when they doubled, and now they have tripled and more.
There are so many responses on the neighborhood website on this topic, and that's good, they say there's strength in numbers. We need to get together in force and go to our representative, or march on city hall with signs. Many people are paying more than me, one poster is paying $4,000 per billing period!
I've been saying for years that the DWP is crooked, and according to many of the posters, it's being allowed by city government. And I believe it. The mayor, Garcetti, ran on a platform of DWP reform. Hah! They had found dubious practices on the part of DWP, hidden funds. They mayor got a small, temporary concession, and then it all went back to the way it used to be.
Evidently about then there was a law suit, one fellow said on the website that the federal government was advised, but it went nowhere or was dropped. I will research this further, I hadn't heard about it when it happened. Nancy, maybe you know?
There was a period of time when a new accounting system caused thousands of incorrect (and higher) bills, and people were meeting with DWP reps in the Councilman's office to have their bills corrected. I went to speak specifically about why they blew me off year after year each time I applied for a medical discount, first for Bob and then for Mike. They denied me year after year! They said they had no form for our situation, and we didn't qualify for what they had. Say WHAT? The discount was only about $12 a month anyway! I knew there was a medical discount, they repeatedly said they didn't have the forms for our situation. And by the way, when I addressed the problem to the rep in the Office of the Councilman, magically the form we needed appeared!
This is what you call gonuvim-ism! DWP needs to be exposed. So many people are being hurt by them. The bills are so high, that they now let people pay smaller amounts over many months, no one ever catches up, you are in mounting debt to the DWP for life.
