The HOA provides security guards, all trained in CPR and first aid. Landscaping on grounds more than 2 feet from your unit. Residents can garden in their own patios and 2 feet around the unit. There's a community garden for those who want to do more gardening. There's a 9 hole golf course, shops for woodworking, photography, ceramics and other things. There's a sewing room. A pool, a very popular place for socializing, a gym that was recently upgraded, parking areas for RVs, I probably forgot a bunch of things. The association office has things like light bulbs available at low cost, and rental of assistive equipment for $2-$5 per month. Painting the exteriors is also one of the HOA responsibilities, and they have a schedule for it. There a lots of interest groups. My aunt had worked on set design and building, among other things at Disney. She took care of the sets for the drama group. I'm sure that I've forgotten some things.
As I wrote, they felt that the HOA dues were worth it.
