Re: The Situation in Syria - Catch 22 -
This situation is fluid right now so anything can change from day to day. We have about 1000 military men in north Syria currently as of the last report I heard, in the event of an ISIS up rise. We had about 50 men in two towns on the southern border with Turkey that had been pulled out to rejoin the others. Trump is going after Turkey with sanctions but so far without results. As I said in another post, I think Erdogan possibly warned Trump that they were going to begin attacking and Trump had our troops withdraw to avoid their engagement, possibly getting killed and potentially leading to a declaration of war with Turkey. I think that there was no time to waste and led to his making the surprising decision without consultation.
Similarly, the Saudi's bought planes etc. but that doesn't mean they're delivered or that manpower is trained for them. They only start making them when they have an order for them and that doesn't happen overnight. (I know a little bit about what goes into the process and the time involved in building and testing them from close up acquaintance) Again, I have to interject my own thoughts. While protecting the oil fields may be important, I think having an airbase in Iran's backyard may be considered militarily even more valuable. Iran has been flexing its muscles with greater frequency recently not only in the Saudi situation but by seizing British oil tankers.
