Re: Aldi grocery store - Elle
You're 100% right. My parents, aunts and uncles all did well after retirement due to savings and investments and pensions. None had major health issues. However, not everyone is fortunate to have a job or jobs that paid enough for them to save or invest enough to help cover their old age. Several of my parent's friends made retirement in poor financial condition due to something catastrophic in their lives. Or at least something that was catastrophic financially. I'm guessing millions were in that boat by the age of 60. I look at my generation. Those people with learning disabilities or physical or mental problems that keep them from making good incomes would be in the same boat today. And housing as you say, is not manageable - it's in a class by itself. Not everyone can make a high 5 figure income. It leaves people in a situation where they can't save and/or invest any serious amount of money for retirement. They have nothing else but SS to live on. I don't see how this will resolve itself without some kind of Gov interference. Not everyone is college material.
What can be done about it though? No matter what side is in power no one is addressing this issue. Maybe the Gov needs to divert money into SS and less into things that don't effect us in a positive way.
