everyone is working part-time, so Obamacare put them in these plans under Medi-CAL. They pay nothing because their individual incomes are so low. One has HealthNet, the other L.A. Care, and the third has Kaiser. Most of the private doctors who take Medi-Cal through HealthNet and L.A. Care are not who you would choose if you had your druthers, they are usually very old, foreign, and with language deficits, but I've been with them on a few visits, and found they will refer to specialists when necessary.
The one who has Kaiser has access to the same doctors as every other Kaiser member, and the facility is fine. I've seen offices of the private doctors who take Medi-Cal, and they are usually in less than great neighborhoods, crowded, and not so nice. The County clinic where I take Mike is in a Medical Center that is modern and clean, and is affiliated with UCLA. There is another we can go to, it is affiliated with USC, but it is downtown. The patients of both are mostly all Hispanic. I much prefer the one in the Valley. It's closer to home, is in a better area than the one downtown, and by and large the patients are far better integrated into society.
