Good for you! You can always expect some sort of rudeness from someone in public but there are some places where it's epidemic. My area is still run-of-the-mill when it comes to foreigners, there aren't enough of them identifiable as such to comment. However, when I lived in Queens and used the IRT 7 train, it was very noticeable. This is the line that travels to the area that has become almost completely Asiatic in recent years of Chinese and Koreans. The women I encountered on that train were the worst. They'd shove you to the side and slip underneath you to get a seat. So bad that one time a person I was standing in front of was exiting and I turned to sit down and wound up in some woman's lap. How she got by me I'll never know.
