Yes they were poor but unskilled. Three of my grandparents were raised on farms. Skills of no use in NYC. The only jobs my grandfathers could find were in factories. One doing factory work and the other as a night guard. I don't know what my paternal grandmother did for a living before she met my grandfather. My maternal grandmother cleaned houses for the wealthy. Only one could read and write in her native language.
It's not likely Drs and Lawyers and professional businessmen who immigrated were poor as church mice. They were educated and had skills they could use to make decent wages.
From what I read online people cannot come here and jump on Welfare and Medicaid.
