Asian immigrants landed in Angel Island in San Francisco Bay, a very different and harsh facility. The Chinese Exclusion act was supposed to last 10 years enacted primarily because they did not want to assimilate. A Gentleman's Agreement with Japan limited them because the Japanese didn't want their people leaving their native land.
Another entry port was in Charleston, SC. These immigrants were lucky. They received free passage, lodging with locals and were welcomed.
