Re: Another danger to us.... Carol
My neighbors were very nice people but they had more than their share of heartaches. A husband and wife with two children, a girl about 10 and a boy about 12 when I first met them when I took over the house. The wife had Lupus and during the time they were here, she went through periods of relative health and periods of life threatening health issues. The first year this house was empty and I was still living in my house in Queens, we'd come out on the weekends just to show a presence and maybe do some work that was affordable and could be done ourselves. There were two mortgages to cover unexpectedly and so it was slow going. There was no furniture here except cots to sleep on and a kitchen table and chairs I picked up in a yard sale. She'd come over with meals almost every weekend and/or invite us over to her place. We became very close to her and her extended family when we actually moved in just over a year later. She had a brother who after being in an auto accident became addicted to pain-killers that he desperately wanted to get off but always would fall back. One night there was a birthday party for one of the kids and all of her family were there. The brother, who normally was very congenial was quieter than usual and left early. The next day we found out that he had committed suicide by plugging the exhaust in his car. He left a note explaining his angst at not being able to stay away from the drugs. Needless to say it cast a pall over the house that never really left. She became sicker during that period and passed away, only in her early 40's. The husband sold the house and with the kids moved away, I've never heard from them since.
