I remember you mentioning growing things on your deck. Rabbits and deer are not the problem here they were in TN. It's the darn heat, humidity, poor fertility of the sand (sand like on a L.I. beach), periods of drought and now our rainy season is failing. This is the driest summer since we moved here. The sand drains rapidly and doesn't hold fertilizer well. My geraniums don't tolerate the heat and mainly go dormant. They pick up in the fall. The humidity causes them to die of a disease I don't know the name of. So I've been replacing half of them every spring. Fuchsia quickly die in the heat. I did switch to a lot of potted desert type plants that are heat tolerant and they seem to be doing OK. But a lot of heat tolerant plants can't cope with the humidity or the rainy season.
FL isn't the best place to garden despite being sub-tropical.
