Plants like geraniums, which are perennials in SoCal, are annuals here. The winters are too cold and the plants die. Same for fuschias. After a few years we know which flowers will bloom when. The deer that feast on everyone's gardens have nothing to do with the region though. All you can do is grow things inside a fenced area or do container planting on a deck or porch if you have one. Right now we have tomatoes ripening in a large plant container on the deck. It will be weeks before they're ripe. There are flowers and herbs growing in containers on the deck too.
