I'm assuming your son's experience is in sales and not mechanics. If he's a good salesperson, that's applicable to a lot of things if he's a good talker.
Quality Control involves a knowledge of the product, one of the positions I held. My expertise for that position was in color, fabrication and construction. What function was she doing in Quality Control and what was the product? That could suggest another avenue to try.
When I was with CK, I held a relatively high position but I hated it because it was draining me dry. I didn't want to quit because my qualifications would only lead to another high stress level position so I went to the President, stated my case and asked if I could be used in another position. I wound up taking a cut of thousands but he gave me the opportunity to create my own position. There was only a very small difference in my take-home pay because I was in a lower tax bracket. Although it was a gamble, the position I created for myself proved to be valuable to them and I became indispensable. They tried to force my retirement at 65, thinking I'd be replaceable but after 3 months without success, I got carte blanche to do my thing indefinitely and I started working from home at the same salary level for almost another 3 years. Turned out to be the best situation I'd ever been in.
