I don't know where all the jobs are the Rep's keep talking about. They may exist but if scores of people are competing for the same jobs, that doesn't leave them in a good place. And so many of the jobs out there are poorly paid with no benefits.
The jobs I saw when checking myself this evening all requested the person have 2 yrs experience, or can lift 75 lbs, or have a special lic to drive the big rigs, ... even the add for a pizza maker wanted someone with experience. WTF? How long does it take to teach someone to make a pizza?
His last job was as some kind of counselor in a drug treatment center. Apparently that position doesn't exist here. She worked in quality control for some large company but it was a temporary position that ended in May or June.
In my day we circled a few job adds in the NYTimes, called, went and filled out an application and in a week or two had a job. We had a chance to sell ourselves the same day we applied for the position. Now people don't have that option or visual and personal advantage. It's done from a distance. I don't see it as a good thing.
While they're waiting to hear something I suggested they take anything that came along for an income. They may or may not take that advice.
