We knew that he was very generous with his friend but she had been doing the driving around to doctors etc. and felt she deserved it until his tales of large sums being spent at the track (which wasn't backed up by his bank statements) This new development was another story and since he would have had to be driven to the bank, she would have had to be aware. We called and asked about it. She claimed she wasn't getting bank statements and that was the reason for the money transfer. In the same phone call, she said he was getting to be too much to handle and we'd have to step in. We were on our way to get him the next day.
He didn't have his bank book. She claimed she didn't have it. We stopped at his lawyer's. finding out he was her cousin. We found out that she had made herself my father-in-law's administrator or legal caretaker with his help. Neither the lawyer or she had ever contacted us. It took the threat of police intervention for her to surrender the bank book. We missed an earlier red flag when he said he didn't receive fruit or candy baskets that we'd send up to him on occasions. Seems she and her daughter never told him they came for him. The shame of it was that he considered her a friend and was very unhappy to have to leave. We didn't tell him that she was trying to take advantage of him only that he couldn't stay with her.
When we brought him home, we had him checked out physically. He had good teeth and was proud of the fact he never had a cavity. That was no longer the case, he needed dental work. He complained his shoes hurt and check his feet found his toenails had grown like claws, a chiropodist was contacted for that. We arranged for a visiting nurse to come in to give him a bath twice a week. (He really liked that and would be waiting at the door for her )
