Re: Terrible conditions. - Carol
How can you be prepared for something that I don't think the likes of we've ever had before? The illegals we've had before were mainly male adults. The surge of unaccompanied youth we had during Obama's tenure were primarily teenagers. The ruling that children could not be housed with adult detainees is not something that was new to this administration. We had enough facilities to provide for families so it wasn't necessary to separate the children. The zero tolerance was supposed to be a deterrent. The parents were advised and had a choice of deportation or separation. An Obama era picture of children in what appeared to be a cage and that set off a hullabaloo to reverse it. We know that children were being used as an entry ticket and that many of the adults they were with were not parents or related. Not being able to reunite children if they had been with their parents with the reversal was lousy processing but a number of them were never claimed or the adult they had been with was not a parent.
You question why we don't just up and deport them when they are caught. According to our laws one reason is they are entitled to "due process". If they claim asylum (which the people in the caravans have been coached to claim) Asylum is not
granted on the basis of economic need. That is the reason the majority are coming. Their claim must be processed and determined whether legitimate or not. Another reason is political correctness. This is primarily in the Democrat's court. It might not be what you as an individual think, but that's their mantra as a party. Our laws are antiquated and must be changed but the Dems won't give Trump one iota of a win if they can help it. Eisenhower was faced with an illegal Mexican problem but there was no political correctness considerations back then. He got rid of them. https://thefederalistpapers.org/us/how-president-eisenhower-dealt-with-americas-first-illegal-crisis
