Lefrak turned into a mess when Welfare people were taken in. It didn't take long. These were not immigrants but poor people of color. Mostly blacks. I saw it happen since one of my closest friends was living there at the time. I've mentioned her in the past. All the furniture was stolen from the ground floor area where you entered the bldg. That was the first thing I noticed. Soon there were needles, used condoms and urine all over the ground floor and she said, the stair cases. The smell of urine had me waiting outside for her. I would not go up the elevator since it was filthy. Anyway her parent's broke their lease and the Judge, after seeing the pictures her parents provided, let them off the hook. Lefrak took them to court to pay what they owed on the lease. Before her parents fled the now ghetto surroundings, her brother, 15 or 16 at the time was mugged in the elevator. He was taking their dog for a walk.
The last time I passed Lefrak it was a totally black area. I'm going to guess only other poor Welfare families moved in. People who had a few bucks (of any race) would not live there. The landscaping was destroyed. There was litter and graffiti everywhere.
Right across 57th Ave which ran along Lefrak was all Latinos in those 1 family homes. Many were converted to 2 family homes. Spanish was the language we heard.
To me it wasn't home anymore. The only place that resembled anything I knew from before was Middle Village. GP and RW were like little Poland....
