I don't recall anyone making lewd remarks to me though no matter where I walked in NYC. A wolf whistle was about as bad as it got. I would pretend I didn't hear it.
In the part of Elmhurst were my mother lived the Chinese may have air dried their laundry but the washlines were behind the houses an unseen. My mother's feeling about them changed over time. She saw they took excellent care of their property and their children. Their children were very quiet and respectful. All adults worked except the one chosen to stay home with the children. There was usually two families in each of those homes. Many were turned into 2 family units plus all had basements and attics. Once the second family got on their feet they moved out and another family member moved in to replace them. None ever causing any problems for anyone.
The last time I was in NYC it was like a foreign country to me. Not home anymore. It was a certain kind of closure I think I needed. I have no desire to ever return there for any reason.
