Re: It takes all kinds. ... Mama
You made me think of some of the early jobs I've had. I mentioned Marine Midland. It was in the stock/bond section and the only thing I remember about it was adding and removing addresses from their mailing lists. Graduating I started working on Canal St. at A.T.&T in their Stenographic Dept. I was an excellent typist and got $4/wk more than my friend who started at the same time as me. They promoted from within and initially it was Dictaphone and transcribing from someone's hand-written notes. I was there for 4 years and noted how slow the promotions to Secretary were and although I was one of the next-in-lines, I decided to look elsewhere. I got a job with the NY Petroleum Council in Rockefeller Center as a Secretary. They are a public relations outfit for the oil industry. It was a pretty boring job overall but the pay was a lot more than I had been getting. Dr. Joyce Brothers was a friend of my boss and she'd stop in regularly. My typing was always better than my sten and I convinced my boss to let me wheel in a portable typewriter and take dictation that way. The results were far from releasable but he could read them and correct what he had dictated. I worked there until I was pregnant and stopped working.
