I took the subway every day for three or four years. I got on at the first stop, Far Rockaway, found a spot near a heater, curled up in my hooded tweed coat, slept a while. Loved to cross Jamaica Bay, see the garbage under the shallow water. There were perverts now and then, drunks, and one crazy woman who would hit people. If I had to do it today, I would be terrified.
Sometimes my father and I would drive into Jamaica, park the car, and take the subway from there. At night I would wait underground for his train to arrive, about a half hour after mine, breathing all that soot. I used to sneeze black. I got up early and didn't get home until 7:30 at night. And boy, was it cold. New York was a hard life, and I was only 18.
