By the time my friends started having sex, married or not, the Catholics as most of them were, knew the rhythm method was the church's way of getting more members. They complained the church had no interest in paying their medical bills or helping raise children people couldn't afford. No one I knew stuck with the method except one friend named Irene. After her 6th child was born, all close together, she and her husband, living in dire poverty (in Deer Park) by then with her aunt helping support all the kids had her tubes done. She told their priest unless the church was willing to help support the unplanned babies they could not afford she was having it done with the birth of that last one. There is nothing in the bible about a women getting sterilized. The priest would not agree to help support the children. She told him she believed God did not want unplanned children born who would live in poverty. He suggested welfare - they refused to go on Welfare, give up sex, or continue to use a method that only works for women who are dead regular. After that 6th child she developed several health problems. I'll mention only the most obvious one. Her teeth started going bad. She lost more than half her teeth before the age of 30.
Irene BTW was one of those Catholic girls that got married a few months before their 1st child was born. If she was going to "sin" (fornicate) I never understood why they didn't just use birth control. She was showing already so they moved to NJ to hide what was going on. That's what got them into financial problems to start with. She was about 17 then. To their credit they remained married with a few serious bumps here and there until he died a few years ago from lung cancer. The hypocrite dropped me as a friend when she realized I was an atheist. I remain friends with her daughter.
