You yourself originally claimed your kids came home because they couldn't afford the rents there where you live. You claimed nothing was affordable. Have you changed your tune? Had your kids made high 5 or a 6 figure incomes they would have remained independent and not depended on you to take them in. Not everyone has a wealthy mother who can afford to take in not only their own four kids who couldn't afford the housing, but a stranger as well - one of their boyfriends. Most people like your kids (who can't afford the local rents) will end up homeless or living in places none us can even imagine. Some will impose on parents who really can't afford to house them while they seek something better for themselves.
I doubt you do drive the back-roads of America so have no clue. In NYC it's well known that some apts are housing 2 or even 3 families sleeping in shifts. There are thousands of illegal apts people rent in desperation.
This economy is not the economy of the past when someone could get a factory job or easily learn a trade and so find work that provided a decent living. When I was 15 (YES ONLY 15) I got a job at Royal Globe Insurance in Brooklyn. I was able to leave my dysfunctional home and not have to depend on Gov handouts of any kind. Nor did I take one penny from my parents. That is not how things are today - don't judge all America by where you live.
Maybe you should look at the broader picture instead of only CA.
