    Course Maps & Info

At a typical Coverdog trial (open shooting dog stakes), what is the distance for a course and time to complete? How may courses should be used for 16 entries in a open shooting dog? Are courses used more than once a day?

The reason you are getting no firm answers to your question is, there is NO TYPICAL Coverdog course. There are too many variables. Terrain, White Mountain courses are slow ankle twisters, course trail footing, New Hampshire is all rocks, cover, heavier earlier in september than October, weather, a rainy season can cause bogged trails, and swollen brook crossings. And many, many more variables, too many to count.

You have to be more specific as to your "Shooting Dog Stakes" What are you talking about, a 1/2 hour quail trial a 1hr Quail Championship or a 1hr wild bird Championship?

          James:
I can really only speak for Gladwin. Courses are set up in 1/2 hr distance. When running 1 hr braces, they combine #1 and then continue on #2, #3/#4 etc etc. How many courses depends on which grounds you are running. Gladwin has 16 1/2 hr courses, or 8 1 hr courses.
How many courses depends on the venue, and yes at some venues depending on the number of dogs entered a course will be used twice in one day.

Hello, I don't usually answer out here, but saw this when I was posting something. My recommendation is to contact the area/club you plan to run at for answers to these questions. The answers to some depend on the area you are running in. Other questions can be answered on the AFTCA website. Hope this helps.

Does anyone have any personal knowledge on courses?

As a general rule of thumb a one hour coverdog course should be about three miles long when the walking is reasonably easy.
