The Black Moshannon trial club has just been awarded the National Amateur Grouse Championship for 2023. The trial will be held at the Black Moshannon trial grounds outside of Philipsburg, Pa. Dates for the trial will be September 22-24, with a starting date on Thursday of entries warrant an earlier starting date.
Rooms will fill up fast with Penn State having a home game that weekend. Rooms are currently available at the Best Travel Inn, in Philipsburg, 15 minutes from the trial grounds. Their number is (814) 342-2004. There will also be rooms available in Clearfield, 30 minutes from the trial grounds.
For those wanting to camp, check with the Woodland Campground for availability: (814) 857-5388
Changes are being made to 4 of the 6 courses we used for the Invitational to better show the dogs, and get into better grouse areas. I'll also be getting permission to set water around the courses, as it can still be rather warm in September.
We're still working on securing judges, and will announce as soon as we have them committed. Dick Brenneman has already agreed to be the reporter.
We're excited to hold another championship at Pa's premier wild bird trial grounds
We have a judging change for the championship. Regrettably, Neal Minard had to drop out from the judging assignment. Taking his place will be Justin McGrail, well know trainer and respected wild bird judge from Michigan. We look forward to Justin watching over our dogs in 4 short weeks along with Dave Hawk from Ohio.
The judging assignments have been finalized with two well respected and knowledgeable people in both cover dog trials and training dogs. I'm very pleased to announce Neal Minard and Dave Hawk will be watching over a strong field of dogs. With Dick Brenneman as the reporter, we have a very veteran crew leading this amateur grouse championship.
The banquet facility and caterer have already been secured. But as a reminder, motel rooms will fill quickly with Penn State having a home game that weekend.
Finally, while working courses on Sunday, I saw my first brood of grouse, and moved a big red male at the end of another course
To enter, does the dog need an amateur-handled Shooting Dog placement, or is an amateur-handled derby placement OK? If derby is OK, does it need to be first place or any placement?
