Michael, just to confuse the issue a bit more. In AKC walking trials, what the FDSB/AFTCA calls a walking shooting dog, the AKC calls a walking gun dog. In the AKC a hunting dog stakes is what we in the FDSB/AFTCA call the gun dog stakes.

Further, walking gun dogs in the FDSB/AFTCA are a great place for beginning trialers to start with their hunting dog. The US Complete recognizes the gundog stakes and compiles win points for dog of the year awards.

Here is a tricky point of the Gun dog. The FDSB/AFTCA does not have a "gun dog" stakes that they recognize so when either of them receive the gun dog essential data form, reporting the placements in the stake, they file it as a "shooting dog" placement. The FDSB/American Field will report and add it to your dogs pedigree as a shooting dog win. If on the essential data form the box indication that the stakes was run to "minimum standards" was checked, then the AFTCA records that as a shooting dog win and issues your dog a shooting dog win certificate, making it eligible to run in a championship.

If that just confused you more, please ask more questions. I'd be glad to answer. you can ask here, message me above or email me at setterclubofnewengland@gmail.com

Generally, the gun dog run/race is closer [gun range] and the judging usually ends at flush.

Stv's description is accurate, I believe, for American Field sanctioned events.

However, the AKC also sanctions Gun Dog stakes which require the dog to be steady to wing and shot. Some AKC Gun Dog stakes also require a retrieve to place, and they are advertised as such.

Some AKC trials are dual sanctioned by both AF and AKC. Typically the stake is listed as a Gun Dog stake in the AKC advertisement and a Shooting Dog stake in the AF ad.

My sense of it, in my area, is that for dual sanctioned trials, there is usually very little difference between the performances of the winning dogs, regardless of breed.

One further distinction between AF and AKC is that in AKC sanctioned trials, the handler is ALWAYS permitted to walk. The walking handler is the standard option and it must state that horseback handling is permitted. In AF, unless it states that the stake is a walking stake, it is assumed that it will be conducted on horseback.
