    Fall trials

Posted by Coverdog Points Committee on 9/12/2020, 3:42 am

The Coverdog Points comittee has voted to suspend points to any trial this fall season if the State hosting the trial has travel restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. If it is found that the State hosting a venue has travel restrictions that limit what participants can travel to the trial, the committee will notify trial chairman before the drawing to inform them of points being suspended. The committee's decision only affects points, not whether or not a trial should run. That is solely up to the host club. Also if a points trial is moved to a different venue/State due to Covid-19 travel restrictions that trial will still recieve points as long as it remains in the same region as original venue(Great Lakes, Mid Atlantic, New England). We would like to thank Greg Blair and Purina for their continued sponsorship of the Coverdog Points program.

The Coverdog Points committee has made an excellent and important decision concerning points/states with travel restrictions and should be applauded. I have a question, mostly out of curiosity, but important to me. Does anyone have a handle on the overall impact of Covid 19 on field trialing ? What percentage of trials have been cancelled and of the ones that have run, how was the entry ? Given my age etc. I have been more than a little timid about interstate travel and the prospects of eating on the road and overnight motel stays. If there is an answer out there, I'd love to hear what others know. Thanks. Mike

Who is on points committee? More importantly, to whom should we be reporting results of our Cover Dog trials? (shooting dog points, derby points, and handler points)

        Thanks.

The formula by which the Coverdog of the Year and Coverdog Handler of the Year, Sponsored by Purina are calculated as follows:

Champion: 12 X the number of dogs.
Runner Up: 8 X the number of dogs

The Coverdog of the Year and the Coverdog Handler of the Year Award tracks all open grouse and woodcock championships,

The overall rules for the awards are that the trials must be open, pay a significant purse, and must not limit entries. Championships generally do not limit entries anyhow, so most of these apply to derby stakes. Not always do situations and developments fit neatly into a set of rules. The awards shall try to be generous in their interpretations and make decisions based on past practice and common sense.
The Awards are independent of trial clubs and do not require clubs to advertise, promote the award, nor does any club or individual need to apply in any way for points. This also means that neither clubs, nor individuals can choose to 'opt out.' An individual may choose to refuse to accept the winner's check, but the dog will still be listed as the winner of the award.

          1. All Open Championships that run on Ruffed grouse and/or North American Woodcock count for points. .
          2. The trial must not limit entries or refuse any eligible runnable dogs as defined by The Minimum Requirements For Dogs.
          3. A purse deemed significant must awarded to the winning handlers.
          4. A new club or a new stake must be run for two years to have a chance to be points eligible. The club should run in accordance to the other listed criteria during this period to best assure points eligibility during this probationary period. If a points stake is not held for two years its status will revert back to the above mentioned probationary period.
          5. Significant format changes of a stake which may result in a significant points swing may also take 2 years until the higher points kick in.
          6. Essential data forms for Points trials must be submitted to Points Committee Secretary within 30 days from the completion of the trial. Failure to do so will result in Points for that trial being forfeited

          Points are awarded as follows:
          Champion: 12 X # of entries.
          Runner up: 8 X # of entries

Should a championship stake be reverted to a shooting dog stake no points will be awarded.

          Derby Points

          1. A derby stake must be scheduled and run in conjunction with a scheduled and officially recognized open, all-breed, all-age, broke dog stake in order to be eligible for points.
          2. The trial must not limit entries or refuse any eligible runnable dogs as defined by The Minimum Requirements For Dogs.
          3. A purse deemed significant must awarded to the winning handlers.
          4. Each club will receive points for one stake in the fall and one stake in the spring.
5.A new club or a new stake must be run for two years to have a chance to be points eligible. The club should run in accordance to the other listed criteria during this period to best assure points eligibility during this probationary period.. If a points stake is not held for two years its status will revert back to the above mentioned probationary period.
          6. Significant format changes of a stake which may result in significant points swing may also take 2 years until the higher points kick in.
          7. The points shall be calculated as follows:
          1/2 hour:
          First Place: 4 X # of entries.
          Second Place: 2 X # of entries.
          Third Place: 1 X # of entries.
          Grouse Futurity Points, First
Place 6, Second Place 4, Third Place 2

1 hour stakes receive double the points.

Any new rules shall require a majority vote by the board to enact.
