Just finished reading Paul Fuller's new book on bird dog training. This is a well written informative book on training pointing dogs. It is a balanced approach to training methods that does not profess to claim that these methods are the only way to achieve a fully trained dog. The part of the book that I found extremely well done and informative was the section on bird scent.
There are many theories about scent and scenting conditions. A lot of experienced trainers over many years have developed different ideas about scent that they have observed having been around bird dogs. To his credit Paul has spent a lot of time and effort researching the material about scent. The conclusions he has reached has been developed by reading and talking to many different experts in the research field. All his research material is well documented. Prior to computers and the internet, researching information on anything as complicated as this was a daunting task. I believe that if you read these chapters on scent you will come away with a different perspective than you previously had.
Paul's book has been sold out at this time and he is in the process of doing another run or making it available as an online book. You can read the three chapters about scent as they were written in three article that were printed in the Northwoods Sporting Journal. Paul is a monthly columnist in that publication. To access those three scent articles log on to his website "Bird Dogs Afield".
Click on the article section. Click on the year of 2017, go down that list and you will find the three scent articles.
