I am of the opinion that gunshyness is most definitely man made. However I am also of the opinion that noise sensitivity can be inherent in the dog and can be selective.
There are dogs that are sensitive to gunfire and must be brought along with care, while there are others that can stand and be relatively oblivious to a fusillade of shots. I think a good bit of this sensitivity(or lack of it) is a function of the dog's personality and overall sensitivity.
There are dogs that are absolutely NOT gunshy, but that are severely impacted by other sounds, like thunder.
I had one that you could take the head off a pheasant at the end of his point with a 12 ga. and he would not even twitch, but the first peal of thunder sent him hiding, shivering and salivating under the couch and you literally had to drag him out after the storm.
