Before yiu bash the Mets for the whole Bobby Bonilla day thing, note that the money they saved short term in the deal, allowed then to pay Mike Hampton. Hampton helped then to the world series. When he left for the Rockies and Denvers "great school system" they got a compensatory pick. Woth that pick, they took Captain America, David Wright.
It kind of worked out pretty good.
