Padres get: OF Juan Soto, 1B Josh Bell
Nationals get: SS C.J. Abrams, LHP MacKenzie Gore, 1B Eric Hosmer, OF Robert Hassell III (Padres' No. 1 prospect/No. 21 overall), OF James Wood (Padres' No. 3/No. 88 overall), RHP Jarlin Susana (Padres' No. 14)
MLB Notes:
Soto, a generational slugger who is under contract through the 2024 season, would join a group in San Diego that already features Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. The Padres sit 12 games over .500, squarely in a Wild Card spot, with eyes on their first World Series title. But, with a serious lack of power, they’ve spent the past few months in search of an outfield upgrade.
It’s hard to imagine a bigger one than this. The 23-year-old Soto, a perennial MVP candidate who burst onto the scene in 2018 before leading the Nationals to a World Series title in 2019, is a career .291/.427/.538 hitter. He blends elite power with elite plate discipline, like perhaps no other player in the sport.
CJIBL Notes:
Chicago has Juan Soto moving to a well stacked and protected Padres lineup for at least the next 2 years. CF Robert Hassell III has a clearer path to playing time in Washington which should be sooner rather than later.
Indiana has Josh Bell with Padres getting more runs/RBIs if they can get HOT enough to make the playoffs.
Colorado has Gore and possibly Hosmer moving to Washington. Gore will have less wins but will be a SP every 5th day. Hosmer is a bench bat with occasional starts on whatever team he winds up with.
Harlem has CJ Abrams going to be the probable everyday SS in Washington and should shine though not being in the Padres lineups could lower some expectations initially.
