The Braves announced they acquired veteran outfielder Robbie Grossman from the Tigers in exchange for LHP Kris Anglin. Around the same time that deal was announced, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand was among those reporting the Braves were nearing a deal that would send left-handed reliever Will Smith to the Astros for veteran starter Jake Odorizzi. That deal was finalized on Tuesday morning.
The Odorizzi trade is a significant one for the Braves, who have wanted to add insurance to their rotation. Grossman provides the defending World Series champions a left fielder who has had great success against left-handed pitchers. Will Smith is the kind of lefty the Astros were looking for. Proven playoff experience closing games.
CJIBL Notes:
Louisiana has Odorizzi going from one winning team to another but loses the Astros stack depth. Grossman, if he plays regularly, will be in a better lineup, but if he platoons could lose some value as a bench player.
Colorado has Will Smith in the same position will new team, a lefty pitching in some high leverage situations but not really closing.
TRADE DETAILS
The Twins are acquiring All-Star right-hander Jorge López from the Orioles, a source told MLB.com's Do-Hyoung Park on Tuesday. Minnesota will send four young arms to Baltimore in left-handers Cade Povich (ranked the Twins' 22nd-best prospect) and Juan Rojas and right-handers Yennier Cano and Juan Nuñez.
CJIBL Notes:
Florida will have Lopez most likely closing with the Twins as well.
