THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
God fills my soul with joy.
PRAYER FOCUS
Those experiencing physical pain
When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your unfailing love, Lord, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy. - Psalm 94:18-19 (NIV)
For several days I had been suffering from joint and lower-back pain. I was constantly grumbling and talking about my physical pain, and I was weighed down with an attitude of defeat.
I didn’t realize how my behavior was affecting my state of mind and relationship with my family, but my daughters noticed it because I wasn’t laughing at their banter or interacting with them in their conversations. I remained serious, expressing no emotion. My oldest daughter asked me, “Mom, why don’t you laugh?” Several responses ran through my mind. The first ones were all the valid excuses I had related to my physical pain. But then came a gentle persuasion from God encouraging me to change my attitude.
The Holy Spirit has graced us with the gift of joy. Instead of focusing on my pain, weakness, and exhaustion, I could choose to lean into the unwavering joy of God. When I began to laugh again with my children, my spirit was lighter and my attitude was transformed.
We can live joyfully, even in the throes of pain. God can bring us the fulfillment of such joy when we align ourselves with God’s will.
TODAY'S PRAYER
Loving God, even in our pain help us experience your joy and love. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Amen.
