Be still, and know that I am God! - Psalm 46:10 (NRSVUE)
I am currently halfway through a 20-year prison sentence for thefts I committed while addicted to drugs and alcohol. As the years have slowly passed, I have spent more than a few sleepless nights thinking and believing that my whole life is just one big mistake. How could God possibly love me or use me in this cold, lonely prison environment?
But lately I have come to see that God has been preparing me for greater things. About a year ago, the prison hired me to be a peer mentor. I now get the opportunity to practice the spiritual fruits of love, patience, kindness, and generosity that I have developed after years of being confined to prison with ample time to “be still.”
Recently, I was promoted to a Peer Recovery Specialist. As such, I will be able to use my life experiences with substance abuse and mental illness to help other men who are struggling with the same issues. Just when I was ready to give up, God showed up and made God’s will for my life crystal clear. My life in prison now has purpose. Each day I am able to help someone society has cast aside.
TODAY'S PRAYER
Almighty God, help us to reach out to your children and lift them up from their despair. Amen.
