Praying Together

My church hosts a morning prayer meeting every day of the year, and we use The Upper Room to structure our time. We sing, pray, and read the scripture. The pastor reads the day’s devotional, and then, one by one, those attending share something from that day’s message that spoke to them. After each person shares their thoughts, everyone says, “Amen.” It is interesting to hear what impresses each person and the verses that are particularly meaningful to them at that time. The pastor then gives a message and often begins with, “In the scripture passage chosen for us providentially today . . .” Finally, we pray about our church issues and offer intercessory prayers.

Occasionally, on cold mornings, I’ve found it hard to maintain this schedule. But it has become a habit before going to work, and I have been strengthened by it. Even during the pandemic, this meeting took place. And I take comfort in knowing that this morning prayer meeting will continue. The word of God will be spoken and heard, and the chorus of voices saying “Amen” to the sharing of those gathered will not be interrupted. When we reflect and pray together, it is a rising fragrance of faith to God.
