Refreshed for Living
Charleen Burghardt (Texas, USA)
Jesus said, “Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” - John 7:38 (NIV)
When my family and I visited Zion National Park in Utah, USA, we felt small as we gazed at the imposing mountains that framed our rustic cabin. This high desert area is known for its cliff formations. We spent several days climbing the steep trails while enjoying the views. During the hikes, I wondered what sustained the abundant plant and animal life in this arid, rocky fortress.
One day we hiked a trail called Weeping Rock. After stopping a few times to catch our breath, we came upon water seeping from above our heads. Surrounding the wet crag, verdant ferns and vibrant grasses grew. With closer examination, we discovered a spring of bubbling, clear, cold water. We stood in awe of this miraculous water source that brought life to the desert.
On the way home, I reflected on that flowing water. It reminded me of what Jesus said about the “rivers of living water.” When we feel desolate and exhausted with no inner resources, Christ provides living water to quench our thirst and renew our spirit. No matter our circumstances, Jesus brings us hope and grace like a spring in the desert. That living water then can flow from us to others who are in need.
TODAY'S PRAYER
Life-giving God, thank you for living water that refreshes and renews us. Help us become springs of living water where others can taste and see your life-giving love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
