For years my mother-in-law had told me that her Grandmother Hughes(Harriet Hodges) had come from VA in a covered wagon when she was 4 years old and during the Civil War she had gotten seperated from her parents and a black couple had took her in and helped her until she was old enough to get a job and then she worked as a housemaid until she married. Harriet couldn't remember much about her family. When I started researching I found a Harriet Hodges on the 1860 census living in Tennessee but it says born in TN and I didn't think this could be right since my mil had always said she came from VA. Then I got Harriet's death certificate and it has born in TN and that her parents were Elvis Hodges and Sarah Ashlock. The family on the 1860 census is Ezekiel Hodges and Sarah, Elvis being the oldest son. I think Harriet had gotten confused over the years, she lived to be almost 100 and remembered her oldest brother's name as her father. If you feel I am correct let me know and I would love to share info back and forth with you, I am nearly 100% sure that I have a picture of Harriet if you would like.
