Women with children with different fathers will have a hard time choosing then.

Many women keep the same surname as their children have.

Ignore the last sentence.
She will be known as Mrs. Harriet Philipps or Mrs Peter Philips.
It is too late

This Saturday Harriet Sperling married Peter Philips, Pss Anne's son.
I understand her family name is Sanders, Sperling being her 1st husband's name.
I know it is common for women who make a carrer either in politics, science, art or whatever, even socially, with her husband's name, to retain it after a divorce (specially if they are not the guilty party).
Comes to mind Raine McCorquodale, who became Raine Spencer, then married a french baron and when she divorced him, reverted to R.Spencer and not to her maiden name.
Harriet is a young and modern woman, a nurse of the NHS.
Not with a withstanding career in her own field AFAIK.
In times when women like to carve their pave way with their own name, why would she stick to be known by her 1st husband's name ?
Could she sign the registar as Sperling ?
I suppose she would start signing as Harriet Armstrong-Jones or be called Lady Harriet Snowdon or Lady Harriet Countess of Snowdon.
