1953: 70 years ago today, Queen Mary, the consort of King George V, died at her London residence of Marlborough House. She was in her 86th year and had outlived her husband by 17 years and also outlived three of her sons including King George VI. At the time of her death she was the longest lived consort of a British monarch, a record she would hold for just 33 years until surpassed in 1986 by her own daughter-in-law, Queen Elizabeth, the widow of King George VI.
