Le roi est mort

I've read that the pronouncement of King George VI's death and proclamation of Elizabeth II as queen was delayed slightly, because of the suspicion that her mother might be pregnant. It's entirely different when a queen regnant dies, regardless of who her heir is. Did Emma of the Netherlands have to undergo a pregnancy test, when her husband died? I'm assuming that in January 1901, the British people immediately shouted "The queen is dead; long live the king!" Is that what one likewise witnessed recently? Was there similar shouting? How exactly did the news captions read?
