Thank you, Charles.
Queen Victoria appointed Disraeli at Osborne and Salisbury at Windsor, facts I recall reading very recently because I was wondering the same myself!
So we know that today's formal appointment of Ms Truss as prime minister by HM at Balmoral was the first such formal appointment to take place outside of London (and the first in Scotland?) since Edward VII made Herbert Asquith travel to Biarritz. (This was a rare case of that much loved monarch being widely criticized, Biarritz, unlike Balmoral, of course being in a foreign country.)
What about earlier, during the reign of Victoria? As is well know she hated spending time in London and prioritized her own comfort and convenience even in the face of public criticism. Did she ever make a potential PM travel to Balmoral or Osborne to kiss hands?
(None of this is meant AT ALL as a criticism of the present Queen. She obviously has very genuine mobility issues and is 96, an age far beyond what any of her predecessors ever reached, and air travel makes the trip from London to Balmoral a perfectly reasonable request for the ministers in question.)
