Is it possible for a non-Anglican to serve in this capacity, in the Church of England? The reason for my asking is that the extended line of succession to the British throne includes a number of Protestants of the Lutheran or Calvinist traditions. Suppose, by some fluke, that HM King Harald V of Norway became the king of Great Britain? Would he, a Lutheran, still become the supreme governor of the Church -- in accordance with the 39 articles?
Most Protestant denominations are in communion with the Church of England so the current legal requirement is simply for the monarch to be Protestant or, at least, not a Catholic. George I was a Lutheran but had no problem being made Supreme Governor so there should be no problem for King Harald or anybody else who is Protestant.
