Re: Bobby Heenan Has Passed Away
Yeah, sad day. I was lucky enough to see him both live and on TV in the AWA in the 70's, which to me was his real prime. By the time he got to the WWF in the 80's he was past his prime as a manager, and that's how most people remember him so fondly, but he became such a great commentator there. The first live card I ever attended in 1976, as I tried to find my seat I heard a group of Laotian people speaking in their native language, and the only thing I could understand was them saying "Bobby Heenan" repeatedly. A few years after that, my grandfather who hated and openly mocked pro wrestling, attended the "Weasel suit" match he had in Green Bay against Greg Gagne. My grandpa said "I've gotta see this shit". Bobby Heenan sold a ticket to a pro wrestling hater, that's how good of a performer he was. That was also a kayfabe breaking thing for me, though I knew it was fake from the get go, but I bought a magazine at the show with pictures of a "Weasel suit" match from Minneapolis, and I could tell from the pics that was the exact same match they did in Green Bay. To me though that only made them better performers to pull that off who knows how many times. His bumps were the biggest there by far, his bled the most, and his blood was the brightest shade of red. He had the biting humor and incredible razor sharp wit, but he was so slimy and hated, and pure evil. Just the best manager ever, and one of the best overall performers ever in the pro wrestling industry. There has never been, and will never be, anyone even remotely like him.
